The answer? STRESS
Stress from our external AND internal environments is what dysregulates our nervous system and perpetuates gut dysfunction and symptoms.
And by internal environment, I'm talking about your internal state of being, which is influenced by your beliefs, thoughts, feelings, triggers, stressors, traumas, perceptions, etc. Aka, your inner world and everything that goes on in your mind.
Because the gut and the brain are connected via the vagus nerve, when one is not functioning properly, it can lead to problems in the other. For example, if you're experiencing stress or anxiety, it can cause digestive issues like bloating and constipation.
It's important to consider the role of nervous system regulation in gut health.
Our bodies are designed to be in a state of balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, but when we're under chronic stress or not taking the time to be mindful of our thoughts, emotions and body sensations, that balance can be disrupted.
This stressful state also perpetuates leaky gut, and when you are experiencing this, it doesn't matter what foods you eat or the supplements you take, because the nutrients won't be absorbed.
It's like trying to fill a bucket full of holes with more water. Without patching up the holes, the water will just continue to spill out.
You must learn how to balance and regulate your nervous system for optimal gut function and healing.
